A default super fund is used when an employee doesn’t nominate their own fund or doesn’t have a stapled fund. When choosing a default super fund, employers typically consider long‑term investment performance, low fees, insurance options, and the level of employer and member support available. Selecting a strong default super fund helps support your employees’ long‑term retirement savings.

When onboarding a new employee, you’ll need to request their super fund details, check whether they have a stapled fund, and provide them with the required superannuation standard choice form if needed. Once you have their details, you can add them to your payroll system and begin making employer super contributions from their first pay cycle.

SuperStream is the Australian Government’s data and payment standard for employer super. It requires employers to send super contributions electronically using a consistent format, ensuring faster processing, fewer errors, and improved super compliance. Using a SuperStream compatible clearing house, such as QuickSuper, helps employers meet these requirements.

If an employer misses a super contribution or pays late, they may need to lodge a Superannuation Guarantee Charge (SGC) statement and pay additional charges. Payday Super requires employers to pay super contributions at the same time they pay employee wages, instead of quarterly. From 1 July, new Payday Super requirements will be phased in, meaning super will need to be paid at the same time as employees’ wages. Paying super on time is a key part of meeting employer super obligations and avoiding penalties.
