NGS Super Financial Planner Charlie Daher is passionate about helping members achieve their financial goals. In his role, Charlie advises on how to prepare for retirement, a process that can include everything from superannuation planning and debt management to insurance advice and investment strategy.
A day in the life
Most days, Charlie spends his time discussing personal and financial goals with those preparing for retirement. In his experience, financial advice is the gateway to retirement, giving members peace of mind and the confidence that they can achieve the lifestyle they want in retirement. “Super is often the second largest asset people have after their home,” says Charlie. “I want to make sure our members make the most of their nest egg.” The process typically begins with an initial consultation where he gathers information about the client’s financial position, lifestyle aspirations, and retirement plans. He then develops a tailored plan and prepares a formal Statement of Advice to present at a follow-up meeting.
Understanding dreams
While being a Financial Planner requires strong analytical and numerical skills, Charlie emphasises the importance of having high empathy and good listening skills. “I recently met with a member who was worried she couldn’t retire in the next year, but after a deep dive into her finances, including discretionary and non-discretionary spending, potential entitlements, and projected returns, I was able to propose a plan that allowed her to retire in that timeframe and travel, just as she had always hoped. It’s really important for me to hear what they want life to look like, so I can help make it happen. It’s about looking at the big picture as well as the finer details to map out a plan.”
The journey to financial planning
Charlie’s journey began at university, where he started studying accounting at the University of Wollongong. But after completing an accounting internship, he realised accounting wasn’t the right fit. A chance encounter at a café led to an offer of a mentorship at a financial planning firm, and that mentorship turned into a passion. Charlie shifted his studies to financial planning and business law. Not long after, he landed a job in financial planning, where he has worked for over eight years.
His advice to aspiring financial planners?
“Be a good listener. You’re hearing people’s stories and guiding them through big decisions. Also, be resilient. The industry is constantly evolving, with new laws, new regulations, and changing economic conditions. You need to stay open to learning and take something from everyone you work with. That’s how I grew.”
When not working, Charlie keeps active with regular gym sessions and travel. In recent years, he’s explored Morocco, Spain, Paris, Oman, Lebanon, Qatar, and New Zealand. He also loves trying new foods and experiencing different cultures.
