Senior Customer Relationship Manager Steven Brown works across many of NGS’s valued NSW schools, helping education professionals manage their super and prepare for their Big Tomorrows.
Finding the right path
With over 25 years of experience in financial services, Steven is passionate about finding ways to connect with education professionals and understand their needs. ‘Everyone has unique needs when it comes to super and are at different stages of their super journey. However, sometimes knowing the best next step isn’t always obvious. My role is to help them create a plan for their future and walk them through their options. On top of providing the best information I can, I believe quality service is imperative, at NGS Super our member's best interests are at the heart of everything we do - when you provide exceptional personalised service it helps the individual focus on their goals without fuss - Members First, Always.'
Connection is key
Steven travels around NSW to visit schools, as well as meeting with schools online. ‘There has been a shift towards more schools wanting to meet face to face. I think there is tremendous value in being in the same room, and that can’t be underestimated. While online sessions are still very effective, being in the same room really allows for better interactions.’ Steven delivers presentations at schools, connecting with staff, answering questions and breaking down complex concepts. Sessions are also an opportunity for staff to learn about the many resources that are available. ‘Whether we meet in person or online, my aim is to share information about super in the most simple and effective way and ultimately connect with the individual.’
Why super isn’t one size fits all
One of the key takeaways Steven has from his experience working in super is that everyone has unique needs. ‘There is plenty of information out there about super. You can read about all the different terms and concepts, and that’s great to do, but really understanding where you’re at and what you need is the best way to elevate your super savings. There are many small and simple actions you can take today such as consolidating, considering making extra contributions or exploring investment options. It really depends on the individual and what else they may need to consider, such as if they plan to take extended leave from work or how much they currently have saved in their super.’
What relationships are really about
For those wanting to commence a career in relationship management, Steven says it’s important to understand that relationship management is essentially about relationship building. ‘Like any relationship you have in your life, it takes time to get to know someone, understand their goals and discover what role you play. When it comes to super, you’re effectively discussing people’s lives, their hopes and dreams for the future. I think it’s a great privilege to have these discussions and, over time, see how that person is working towards their goals and making their dreams a reality.
Steven is married with 4 kids and is a dedicated Newcastle United football fan, owning over 40 unique jerseys. When not cheering on his favourite team, he enjoys working on his Holden commodore.
