Important notice about CommInsure
At NGS Super we are deeply committed to being an ethical business, and this extends to our business partners. We are currently working with CommInsure to understand what actions are being undertaken to address recent issues. We will continue to do our utmost to maintain the highest standards for our members, and will inform members of progress.
March 9 2016
CommInsure has advised NGS Super that it is currently working on a plan to identify if there are any NGS members affected by the media reports on denied or delayed claims – to date, none of the claim matters brought to light by recent media has involved NGS Super members.
NGS has a philosophy of putting the member first and this applies to our insurance claims process. By law, NGS cannot self-insure and as a result the NGS Trustee outsources three types of insurance to CommInsure: life, TPD and income protection. The Fund does not offer Trauma Insurance. We have been, and continue to be, committed to ensuring that a robust process is maintained at all times in the review of member insurance claims. To this end, all insurance claims declined by CommInsure are reported to, and reviewed by, the NGS Claims Review and Insurance Committee. The Claims Committee is comprised of three Trustee Directors and an independent legal expert with a long history and experience with insurance claims. If insured members are dissatisfied with the outcome of their claim after this Committee’s review, they also have the option to have the claim reviewed by the Independent Superannuation Complaints Tribunal at no cost.
In this way, the Fund has embedded a sound insurance review process which has operated effectively for years, and in specific circumstances in the past, the Fund has requested CommInsure to reassess a declined claim, or provide further independent medical assessments, in order for further consideration to be undertaken of the circumstances.
We are currently in the midst of an insurance review with CommInsure. As part of this review, NGS will take into consideration the ethical standards and governance approach of CommInsure. We apply these standards across any review process as a matter of principle, and if any of our business partners do not meet these standards, this may trigger a new partner tender.

April 26 2016 update
CommInsure has recently announced the appointment of a panel of independent members to review their processes. As stated by CommInsure the establishment of this Claims Review Panel is to “provide an additional layer of assurance for complex claim assessments and decision-making processes”.
